D.H. Hammond, Ill But Four Days, Is Dead
David Henry Hammond, who is known to nearly every resident of the Hill, having lived here for more than thirty years past died at four o’clock yesterday afternoon. Through his death Totowa loses one of its most widely known and highly respected citizens, whose place it will be hard to fill.

Although he had been a patient sufferer for years from Bright’s disease he maintained his characteristic jovial spirits. He was out-of-doors for the last time on Christmas day when he spent the holiday with his nephew. Mr. Hammond began to fail a few days later although his condition did not become alarming until Sunday morning when he was take to his bed. His death was peaceful, for he realized that he had lived his life of usefulness nearly four score instead of the allotted three score and ten and that his life had not been spent in vain.

Always of a cheery disposition Mr. Hammond posessed [sic] the happy faculty of making friends who were not mere acquaintances. He was fond of friendship, although he never sought membership in any of the secret order. His unassuming ways need permitted him to enter the political arena. Nevertheless, he was interested in national, state and local affairs.

Born on July 22, 1833, the late Mr. Hammond was therefore in his seventy-eighth year. His father, Thomas Hammond, was a prominent carpenter of Ridgewood, then known as Godwinville, at the time of the birth of the subject of this sketch. When a young man Mr. Hammond came to Paterson and leaned the blacksmithing trade. He worked for old time blacksmiths for several years, or until he entered the employ of the Roberts’ locomotive works where he remained until his retirement six years ago.

Fifty-five years ago Mr. Hammond was married to Miss Elizabeth Lock [sic], a society belle of Paterson of that time. They continued to live in this city, moving to Totowa Hill thirty years ago. For the past nine years they have lived at 108 Marion street.

Besides his widow three daughters are left to mourn his loss, Mrs. William A. Cueman and Mrs. George A. Allee, of Totowa, and Mrs. William L. Reed, of Schnectady, N.Y. There are thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held from the Marion street home at two o’clock on Saturday afternoon. Rev. Charles Schweikert, pastor of the Union Avenue Baptist church, will officiate. The interment will follow at Laurel Grove.
