Robert Hogan’s origins are currently unknown. His children report being born in Kentucky on census records, the earliest of which would be 1840. He purchased land in 1856 in Union County. Many of his records state he was born in Tennessee. In 1880 he says his father was born in Tennessee and his mother in North Carolina.

In her marriage licenses Martha Ann answered the questions of origin of parents in several different ways. In the marriage to William Brown, she lists father’s birthplace as Tennessee, nothing for mother. She remarried in 1882 to W.C. Jenkins where she listed father and mother’s birthplace as Hopkins County, Kentucky. When she marries John Moseley in 1884 she lists father’s birthplace as Tennessee again and nothing for mother. Finally in 1914 when she married Enoch Allen Garner she lists father born in Henderson County, Kentucky and mother born in White County, Illinois.

Mary E. Hogan’s marriage application (1866 and 1878) lists her parents as both from Tennessee. Robert Louis Hogan’s marriage application lists his parents as born in Hopkins County, Kentucky. John W. Hogan’s application does not list where his parents were born. Charles Hogan’s application list parents birth as in Hopkins County, Kentucky. When son James W. Hogan was married to Nancy Jane Sigler in Union (1859), there was no record taken of parents.

In census records, Robert is listed as being born in Kentucky (1860), Tennessee (1870, 1880).

This marriage date was recorded in an index made by the W.P.A. in the 1930s. There was only a small slip of paper in the microfilm records and indicate this was a license request. No marriage return has been found in Hopkins or Union County. Perhaps they thought this was enough.
