Notes for David DEMAREST
The immigrant ancestor was living in Middleburg,Walcheren, Zeeland 1643-1651. Two of his children were born there. In 1651 he moved his family to Mannheim-on-the-Rhine which was a chief Huguenot settlement. Two or three more of his children were born here including our ancestor David Davidse. They thought this would be a permanent settlement but the threatening religious wars convinced David to emigrate to America. He paid 39 florins for each adult and 19 for each child under 10. The bill for the Des Marets family was 175 florins, 10 stivers, an exorbitant amount for that time. His family reached New Netherlands in 1663. He joined the Huguenot colony on Staten Island and in 1664 was chosen as one of the delegates to the New Netherlands provincial assembly. Staten Island was sparsely settled and in constant danger from Indian attacks and threats of English invasion. It was probably this unsettled condition of living that caused them after two years to move to New Harlem. After problems with taxes, he moved to Hackensack River area on a French patent hoping to establish a French refugee colony.
