Obituary notes for Lieut. Solomon Ellis FINK
Evening Free Press and the Winfield Tribune, Monday, August 19, 1912, pg. 1.

Col. E. S. Fink one of the pioneers of Cowley county, died suddenly at his home at 642 East Tenth street yesterday afternoon at five o'clock.

While the immediate cause of his death was heart trouble this was not the disease from which he had been suffering. He had had nervous attacks and stomach trouble for years but death came suddenly Sunday evening when the action of his heart was impaired. He had not been feeling well that day and his sons, Ellis and John and their wives were at the house with him at the time of his death. He talked with them until within a few minutes before he walked into an adjoining room, with a little assistance, and lay down on a pallet. Soon the attack came and he was dead, when the doctor arrived only a short time afterward.

Colonel Fink was born in Canfield, Ohio, Oct. 17, 1838. In 1862, he entered the army, joining the 122 Illinois Infantry as a private. He served in this regiment and in the 111 United States Volunteer regiment as first lieutenant and regimental quartermaster until July 1865 when he resigned his command of the regiment although he was not commissioned as colonel and in this way he came to be called that. He was never commissioned colonel as Gen. Lee surrendered before Congress could act.

He came to Winfield from Ohio in 1886 and engaged in the practice of law. He was county attorney of Cowley county from 1894 to 1896 and was always prominent in law circles until his retirement. He was admitted to the bar May 1, 1861 and fifty years later he retired and locked his office. This was over a year ago. His wife, Mrs. Martha P. Fink died October 27, 1910. All the children survive. They are John W. Fink and Ellis Fink, now probate judge, both of Winfield, Mrs. Robert Hudson, of Winfield, Mrs. Robert Hudson, of Hudson, N. Y., T. P. (Peirre) Fink, of San Diego and Miss Mamie Fink, of Winfield. The last named is now in San Diego where she went to visit some time ago but she will return for the funeral. All of the children will be here for the funeral except possibly Mrs. Snyder.

It has not yet been decided when the funeral will take place.1714
