Notes for Antony Jansen VAN SALEE
There are differing accounts as to the birth of Anthony, the fourth child of Jan Janszoon. He is listed as either born in Cartagena, Spain or in Morocco. He and his brother were referred to as “mulatto” in documents from New Amsterdam where they settled in early 1600s.
Known sometimes as Antony Jansen Van Vaes from his having lived for sometime in Morocco at the cities of Salee and Fez (Vaes), Anthony Jansen Van Salee became a pirate and captured Spanish and other Catholic ships. His “Beggar’s Badge” bore the motto “Rather Turk than Papist” and was one of the most famous badge or coin in Europe. This was the motto of the Dutch Protestants who rebelled against the Spanish Inquisition, yet remained loyal to Philip II.
He emigrated at an early date to New Amsterdam, where he resided from 1633 to 1639. In April 1639, he and his wife were banished from New Amsterdam in consequence of their being “slanderous and troublesome” persons. They removed to the west end of Long Island. They moved back to New Amsterdam in 1670 and died there without leaving a will. He was said to be extremely strong.
