Deceased Name: Charles W. Shafer Sr.
Charles W. Shafer Sr., 80, of the Meth-Wick Community, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2007, in St. Luke's Hospital after an extended illness. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Stewart Funeral Home, by the Rev. Rollin Oswald. Music by Ms. Betty Debban.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta; four sons, Charles (Lynda) of LaVista, Neb., Byron (Phyllis) of Colts Neck, N.J., Alan of Vorhees, N.J., and Dean (Sue) of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Eileen (Bill) Engelman of Castro Valley, Calif.; grandsons Bob, Dwight, Michael, Ryan and Christopher; and granddaughters Morgan, Sarah and Emmy.
Charles was born July 23, 1926, in Rapid City, S.D., the son of Milo C. and Olive (Turner) Shafer. After serving in the U.S. Army, Charles earned his B.S. from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1949, and his M.S. from the University of Colorado in 1951.
Charles married Roberta Jane Holmes on Aug. 26, 1952, in Hazelton. They lived in the New York City metropolitan area for 40 years. As a chemist, Charles spent his professional career with NL Industries and the Mearl Corp. He was a member of the American Chemical Society for over 50 years.
Charles devoted years of volunteer time to the Boy Scouts of America, spending countless hours leading hikes, campouts and other activities. Retiring in 1992, Charles and Roberta moved into the Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids.
