Joan Schumacher Hope 79, died on August 24, 2005 at Sun Health Hospice, Peoria, AZ. Joan lived in Sun City West, AZ, since 1996 after moving from her native Indianapolis. She was a graduate of Shortridge High School (1944) and Butler University (1948). Her degree from Butler was a B.S. in Home Economics in the College of Education. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, and earned a Masters Degree from Butler in 1972. She worked at Rock Island Refining Corporation in Indianapolis from 1949-1967, before beginning a 20-year career as a Home Economics teacher in 1968, in the Indianapolis Public School System. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, William J. and Virginia B. Schumacher; and a sister, Dorothy S. Turner. Three children survive: William G. Hope, Yuba City, CA; James C. Hope, Ormond Beach, FL; and Gail L. Hope, Rochester, NY. Other surviving family members include her step-mother, Ruth P. Schumacher, Indianapolis; brothers, William G. and Max B. Schumacher, Indianapolis and Carl E. Schumacher, Prescott Valley, AZ; sister, Mary S. Loeber, Scottsdale, AZ; nieces, Linda S. Fryc, Grand Rapids, MI and Karen E. Schumacher, West Palm Beach, FL; nephews, Bruce A., Brian E. and Mark D. Schumacher, Indianapolis, Stephen M. Turner, Byron Center, MI and Gary P. Turner, Las Vegas, NV. A memorial service will be held on September 28 at 11 a.m. with visitation at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis. Memorial contributions may be made to the Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (FSMA) in honor of Malorie Fox, Joan's great-great-niece. Mailing envelopes are available at St. Luke's.
