Obituary notes for Paul H. MULFORD
WELLSBORO, PA., THURSDAY. DECEMBER 28, 1950Dist. Forester Paul H. Mulford Dies in Phila.
Paul H Mulford. well known forester of Tioga county, prominent churchman, and highly respected citizen of Wellsboro for many years died unexpectedly last Friday, in Philadelphia where he was a surgical patient in Hahnemann Hospital.
Mr. Mulford. who retired on Dec. 1 as District Forester of the Tioga-Lycoming District went to Allenwood Sanitarium for treatment soon after and from there was sent to the Philadelphia Hospital. He had been in poor health for some time.
Born in Montrose on May 15, 1885, he was the son of Benjamin and Frances J. Mulford..
. His early life was spent there where he graduated from high school and where he married his wife, Emily Taylor Mulford who survives.
Soon after he graduated from the Pennsylvania Forest Academy at Mount Alto in 1907, he was assigned to Asaph, with the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry, and where state forest lands were being acquired and a forest tree nursery had just been started.. Under his management, the nursery was gradually enlarged to 20 acres with a capacity of about 2.000.000 seedlings per year. In the meantime the state continued to acquire cut-over and often times burned-over forest land.
In 1920, under Governor Pinchol’(s administration, the Department of Forestry reorganized and the Asaph nursery was abandoned.. Under the new organization all of the State forest land in Tioga county and some in Lycoming county was incorporated into the Tioga District and Paul Mulford was made District Forester. In 1929 Bradford county was added to the Tioga District for forest fire protection purposes With the exception of
a short period during the Earl administration, he was in charge of the Tioga District continuously until his retirement this year.
Under his management, the amount of forest land burned over each year has been materially reduced. Where once a 1000-acre fire
was regarded as ordinary, a 100 acre fire is now regarded as a large one.
The amount of State forest land under his management grew to more than 125.000 acres with facilities incident to proper forest management and for public enjoyment. :
The Tioga District is regarded as a monument Paul Mulford's devotion to his career as District Forester. To him it was more than a career, it was his life.
Paul Mulford was a member of Ossea Lodge, F. & A. M., and the Coudersport Consistory. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 29 years and acted as an elder of the church for 20 years. A man of sterling qualities, possessed of a keen sense of humor and devoted to his family, he was a friend and neighbor to be counted on at all times: a man who in his association with the people of this area constantly increased his large circle of staunch friends and admirers.
Surviving besides 'his wife, are one daughter. Mrs. Elvin C. Patterson, of Gettysburg: two sons. James of New York: and Paul. Jr. of near Philadelphia, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Johnson & Tussey Funeral Home with the Rev, Robert W. L. Mark and the Rev. O. G. Cocks officiating. Burial will be made in the cemetery at Montrose.
