Obituary notes for John George BECKER
Nevada State Journal 18 February 1890
Death of an Old Citizen
About eight o’clock Sunday evening George Becker, one of Reno’s oldest and most respected citizens died at his elegant home on Commercial Row. Momentarily for the last few days he has been expected to breathe his last, and yet the community and his grief stricken family can hardly realize that George is no more. Mr. Becker has been in business in Reno for a great many years, and had by hard work built up a prosperous business in the manufacture of malt beer and soda water. He was respected and liked by all who know him for his honesty and geniality of character. Deceased was a native of Germany and 49 years of age. He leaves a loving wife and six children to mourn his loss, all of whom were with him during his last illness to administer to his wants and alleviate his last suffering moments as much as possible. He also leaves a brother, Jake, who never left his bedside until the last. Deceased was a member of the United Workmen, Knights of Honor, and one or two other orders, and in all of which his life was insured. The funeral will take place tomorrow. The Journal extends its sympathy to the bereaved family.

At Rest.
The mortal remains of the late John George Becker were laid to rest in Hillside Cemetery yesterday afternoon. Religious services were held at the Episcopal Church conducted by the rector, Rev. Wm. Lucas. The remains were escorted from the family residence to the church and from the church to the cemetery by members of the Orders of Knights of Honor and United Workmen, and a large concourse of citizens and friends. At the grave the solemn rites of the secret orders were conducted by P.H. Mulcahy. And thus is over the earthly career of an honorable man, a good citizen, a loving husband and devoted father.

Death of George Becker
Grim Death Claims His Own Once More
John George Becker, one of Reno’s most esteemed citizens, departed this life on Sunday evening, February 16th, about 8 o’clock. For one so favorably known a short skeetch of his life will be read with interest by his many friends:
George Becker was born December 16, 1841, at Klingen, Rhein Phaltz, Germany, and came to the United States in 1857. He came to Washoe City in 1860, engaged in business there until the Central Pacific Railroad was built, then went to Wadsworth in 1869 and remained there until 1870, when he moved to Reno and went into business with the well-know Charles Knunst, whom he shortly afterward bought out, and by his industry and well-known integrity, soon built up a fine business and comfortable home for his family.
Deceased was married at Franktown, Washoe county, on December 18, 1866, to Miss Annie Schaeffer, the result of such marriage consisting of as good a family of children as Washoe county can boast, namely: Four girls — Annie, aged 22 years; Louise, aged 20; Katie, aged 18 and Adie, age 5 years, and two boys, George, aged 16 years, and Harry, aged 13. Mr. Becker also has two brothers, the well-known J.J. Becker of Reno, and Fritz Becker of California; and also two sisters, Mrs. Sauer of Franktown, and Mrs. Tomamichel of Reno, who in conjunction with his own family, mourn the loss of a kind husband, affectionate father and loving brother.
George Becker was a member of Nevada Lodge, No. 5, A.O.U.W., and Nevada Lodge, No. 3020, Knights of Honor, in good standing, and was burked under the auspices of those Orders on Wednesday afternoon, February 19th.
