“Drifted on Stage”
Miss Nina Paul, Who is Mrs. Kreyer and Was Miss Jenkins, Is a Denver Product
To those who have seen Lincoln J. Carter’s melodrama, “Remember the Maine,” playing this week at the Denver theater, and to those who intend seeing the play, it will be of interest to know that the heroine, Miss Nina Paul, is a Denver girl.
Miss Paul’s name now is Mrs. E.F. Kreyer. She will be remembered by a large number of young people in the city as Miss Nina Jenkins. She was a pupil of Logan school in 1893 and 1894, and afterwards graduated at the Central Business college. For three years she acted as a stenographer in various offices in the city, and had not the slightest idea of going on the stage. In fact her ambition lay in an entirely different direction.
The way she came to find that her talents were in the dramatic line was peculiar. In 1895 her younger sister, Miss Ada Jenkins, who has evinced since childhood remarkable dramatic talent, was playing children’s parts with a stock company at Elitch’s Gardens. She became acquainted with E.F. Kreyer, who was a member of the troupe, and became deeply interested in the child. He met her elder sister, Miss Nina, and advised her to go on the stage. She did so in December 1896. She traveled with a repertoire company, and leaned and played seven parts in seven days. The next July she met Mr. Kreyer again in Denver and they were married.
They traveled last season in “A Breezy Time,” Mrs. Kreyer as a soubrettee and Mr. Kreyer taking the part of an old man. This year they have been with “Remember the Maine,” in which Mrs. Kreyer plays the Heroine’s par, the Cuban girl.
Mrs. Kreyer is little more than a school girl. Her rise has been rapid and substantial. The season ends in April, Next, and Mr. Carter has already engaged both for next season in “Just Before the Dawn,” a new production.

“Denver Girl Who Weds Aged Actor Gets Her Freedom”
[photo] Mrs. Nina Kreyer, Denver Actress, Who Found a Life On the Stage Not What She Thought. She Secured a Divorce From Edmund F. Kreyer, Her Theatrical Husband, On the Grounds of Non-Support
Being married to an actor – one who is nearly twice your age – is not wholly delightful. This was the experience of Nina Kreyer, a Denver girl and an actress of no mean repute. Mrs. Kreyer is not more than 25 years old. Her tale of woe secured her a divorce from Edmund F. Kreyer in the county court.
The husband, who is almost 50 years old, is at present with a theatrical company in Chicago. When but 16 years of age, Mrs. Kreyer – at that time Miss Nina Jenkins – fell in love with Kreyer. She was theatrically inclined and when Kreyer pictured to her a life on the stage, small wonder the little Denver girl fell in love with the thespian.
Mr. Kreyer kept his word. He took his young wife on the road and she developed into a first-class actress. The life of the stage, however, was not to her liking and eventually she retired, returning to Denver.
Mrs. Kreyer secured her divorce on the nominal grounds of non-support. She testified that her husband had failed to contribute on cent toward her support since August, 1907.
