Obituary notes for Robert Walter BRADLEY
Wyoming Tribune, no. 33 February 08, 1915, page 1 & 2
Robert W. Bradley, aged 62, retired contractor and for more than 30 years a resident of Cheyenne, died at 11 o'clock this morning at Castle Dare, corner Carey avenue and Twentieth street. Death came after an illness of two months from cancer of the stomach, weakening his condition to the extent that yesterday he contracted pneumonia. He died twenty-four hours later.
Mr. Bradley was one of the city's foremost builders. Until his retirement six years ago, he was continuously engaged in the construction of buildings in Cheyenne, among them being some of the largest and most substantial in the city.
He was the father of Mrs. R.N. LaFontaine, wife of the present mayor, Walter J. Bradley, manager of Capitol Avenue theatre, and Mrs. R.S. Van Tassell of Cheyenne.
The deceased was born on the Isle of Man in August, 1852 [sic - record in 1851]. While he was yet a young man he went to England where he served a seven year apprenticeship as a stone cutter and mason. He came to America in 1870 locating in Chicago, where he engaged in business as a contractor. It was while in Chicago that he met and married Miss Elizabeth Hardman, of Bolton, England. To this union four children were born, all save one daughter surviving.
Mr. Bradley came west in 1879, locating in Denver. In Colorado he discovered and opened the famous sandstone quarry at Stout, west of Fort Collins, where he accumulated a small fortune. The family moved to Cheyenne in the early 80's. For a number of years Mr. Bradley engaged in contracting for himself, but during his career here he also worked in partnership with M. P. Keefe, C.E. McGarvey, R. N. LaFontaine, and with his son-in-law and son, Walter Bradley. Among some of the important buildings he constructed were the Telephone building, the Stock Growers bank building, the Parish House, the Wyoming Fuel and Feed company building, and sixty-five buildings at Fort D.A. Russell and construction work for the city water department.
His first wife died in Cheyenne ten years ago. Five years later he married Mrs. Wilma Dickert, of Salt Lake City, who now survives him.
When taken ill two months ago, Mr. Bradley consulted specialists in Denver and in Rochester, Minn., but gained only temporary relief. His condition rapidly grew worse. He rallied for a short while and was able to be about the house, but when stricken with pneumonia he sank rapidly.
Besides his wife and three children, he is survived by three brothers, Isaac Bradley, of Cheyenne, John J. Bradley, of Denver, and David Bradley of Australia.
Remains are at Gleasons. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
