Herald News (West Paterson, NJ) - Friday, July 21, 2006
Deceased Name: Joseph Gorab, former head of Manchester Was regional school's first superintendent
Joseph A. Gorab, former superintendent of Manchester Regional High School in Haledon, died Wednesday. He was 95.

His daughter, Wendy McNeill, described him as "an extremely generous and giving person whose main interest in life was helping people."

Born in Paterson, Mr. Gorab lived in Haledon and Woodcliff Lake before moving to Little Falls. As a child, he helped deliver groceries for his parents' business. A 1930 graduate of Paterson Normal School, now William Paterson University, Mr. Gorab earned a master's degree in education in 1952 from Rutgers University and completed his doctorate at Columbia University Teacher's College.

Mr. Gorab began his career as a teacher in the Rochelle Park public school system. He quickly rose to become a principal in the Woodcliff Lake school system and in the Totowa borough schools. In the early 1950s, as superintendent, he participated in the building and opening of Washington Park School in Totowa.

When Haledon, North Haledon and Prospect Park decided to regionalize in the mid-1950s, Mr. Gorab was selected as the first superintendent of Manchester Regional. According to McNeill, her father supervised the creation and building of the high school, working in a makeshift office in the local municipal building jail cell.

"He oversaw everything from breaking ground on the property to the first graduating class of 1961," she said.

In addition to his work at the grade schools, Mr. Gorab was acting placement director and an adjunct professor at earlier incarnations of William Paterson University.

Mr. Gorab's role as an educator didn't stop at the schools.

"He was a teacher in every facet of the word, as a father and a grandfather. There was always something we learned from his wisdom," McNeill said. "He was the epitome of an educator."

When he retired in 1971, the Board of Education honored Mr. Gorab with the title "superintendent emeritus."

Mr. Gorab remained involved i in many local organizations, which kept him active in the community, especially with senior citizen causes.

He also served as a liaison in the creation of senior groups and helped develop a program to assist seniors with trips to the store and to doctors, long before the Passaic County established a senior transportation system.

Because of his many decades as an educator and activist, "he touched a lot of lives in his career, McNeill said. "There wasn't a person we met that hadn't crossed paths with him."

Mr. Gorab was a member of New Jersey Schoolmasters, American Association of School Administrators and Retired Educators in Passaic County.

He was a past master and distinguished brother of Lodge 263, Free and Accepted Masons; past patron of Chapter 224, Order of the Eastern Star; a member of Ancient Arabic Order Noble Mystic Shrine Salaam Temple, Livingston, and Valley of the Northern New Jersey Scottish Rite, Lincoln Park; and past president of the Jolly Seniors. He was an elder and deacon of the First Reformed Church.

Surviving are his wife, the former Betty Cueman; three daughters, Betty Ann Carter of Riverdale, Diane Chandler of Lake George, N.Y., and Wendy McNeill of Little Falls; a brother, Edmund A. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Theresa Grubbs of Rockville, Md., and Effie Norton of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
