B.L. Stafford Dies; Passaic Prosecutor 69

Funeral services for Passaic County Prosecutor Bernard L. Stafford will be held Thursday followed by a solemn high requiem mass in St. Theresa’s Church. He will be buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

The 69-year-old attorney and former Democratic mayor of Paterson, sworn into office after a year’s hassle February 2, suffered a heart attack yesterday and died shortly afterward in Marnert Memorial Hospital

Stafford spent the day in court trying John Heberling, 19, of Clifton, on a charge of murdering Mrs. Almira Force.

First Assistant Prosecutor Salvatore D. Viviano said Stafford took and “energetic interest” in the case and at no time appeared ill.

He was being taken home by his chief clerk, Jasper Kirschner, when he suffered the heart attack. Kirschner took him to the hospital where he was place in an oxygen tent. Stafford died about 10 minutes after his admission to the hospital.

A graduate of Seton Hall and the New York Law School, Stafford was noted for his courtroom eloquence and was considered one of the top trial lawyers in the state.

Stafford was mayor in 1938 and 1939 and was named later an advisory master in Chancery Court. He served as assistant prosecutor in the 1920’s.

In 1916 he was named county Democratic chairman and in that post ran Woodrow Wilson’s presidential campaign in the county that year. He also managed William L. Dill’s unsuccessful campaign for governor against Harold G. Hoffman in 1934.

Democratic Governor Robert B. Meyner nominated Stafford to the prosecutorship over a year ago but the appointment was blocked in the State Senate by Senator Frank W. Shershin (R-Passaic). Shershin insisted that a judge be named by Meyner to succeed County Judge Alexander M. Mcleod before the prosecutor is appointed.

In January of this year, Meyner nominated Prosecutor Donald G. Collester of Clifton County judge and Stafford prosecutor. Both appointments were approved.

Surviving are his widow, the former Josephine Lee; two daughters, Mrs. Josephine McDevitt of Pompton Lakes and Mrs. Ann Marchese of Clifton; and four grandchildren.
