Sawyer Tice Chase , 86, of Huntingdon, and formerly of Westwood, N.J., passed away Monday, June 11, 2012, at home.
He was born Feb. 9, 1926, in Schenevus, N.Y. His wife, Diana Chase, survives at their home.
Mr. Chase is survived by three children, Kimberly Harris and her husband, Dale, of Lancaster, Ohio, Tyler Chase and his wife, Diane, of Bloomingdale, N.Y., and Rebecca Toman and her husband, Scott, of York; eight grandchildren, Amelia Harris, Corinne Harris, David Harris, Emma Harris, Sawyer Tice Chase, Dellice Chase, Andrew Toman and Erika Toman.
He was the sole survivor of a family of three children, having been preceded in death by his sister, Martha ( Chase ) Ball, and his brother, Lowell Chase .
Mr. Chase was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Huntingdon.
He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943-1946 in the Asiatic Theater of Operations.
Mr. Chase graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Syracuse University and a master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School.
His love of athletics led him to a career in physical education as a teacher and football and track coach, first at Trinity School in Manhattan, New York City, N.Y., then to a junior high school in Ridgewood, N.J., where he remained for 39 years.
An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Chase spent his summers as a counselor at the Forestcraft Hiking and Mountain Climbing Camp in the Adirondack Mountains for 30 years. Family and friends remember him as a devoted family man and referred to him as a "lovable grump." Throughout his life, he was involved with Boy Scouts, skiing and hiking clubs. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling, especially to be with his family.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 15, at the St. John's Episcopal Church, 212 Penn St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Fr. Patrick A. Collins officiating, assisted by Deacon Charlie Cruikshank.

Arrangements are under the direction of the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon.
