Obituary notes for Doris Eleanor WEAVER
Niagara Falls Gazette, Monday, 15 February 1958, p. 12, viewed at http://fultonhistory.comMrs. Bradley’s Body Still Not Recovered
Miami, Fla. (AP) – The Coast Guard today reported search has been discontinued for Doris Bradley, 59, of Ransomville, N.Y., missing since Saturday when the motorboat in which she was riding capsized.
Ransomville – Roy L. Bradley, Youngstown-Wilson Rd., will arrive home today from Florida after his wife was swept into the Atlantic Ocean off Alligator Reef in the Florida Keys.
Mr. Bradley, 60, and his wife, Doris, 59, rising in separate boats, were caught in a sudden storm. The 16-foot boat in which Mrs. Bradley was riding capsized Saturday in the heavy seas throwing her and five other persons into the water.
Mrs. Helen Regan, daughter of the Bradleys, said today that according to reports, her mother who had been riding in a sheltered part of the craft, took a “death grip” on the side of the boat making it impossible for the others to rescue her.
In the boat were Steve and Ann Carveth, Maple Rd., Wilson, Harry Mawhiney, Lockport, and two Florida men, Jack Carleton and William Wedlow, both of Istamoranda, Fla.. Survivors were picked up by a charter boat commanded by Walter Stork.
Meanwhile, the boat in which Mr. Bradley was a passenger made shore. Occupants of that craft believed the other boat was immediately behind, but were unable to tell because of the height of the waves.
A Coast Guard helicopter was sent to search the area, three miles north of Alligator Reef Saturday, after the accident which occurred at 2:45 p.m. The search continued Sunday. Officials held little hope that the body will be sighted today.
Mrs. Bradley was a member of the Fillmore Methodist Church and of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. In addition to her daughter, the Bradley’s have another daughter, Mrs. Dorthy Wright, Las Vegas, Nev., a son, Roland Bradley, and 10 grandchildren. Mr. Bradley and his son operate a farm. Mr. Carveth is president of Carveth Industries, Lockport.
