Former Lewiston resident Claus John Breier III of Bethesda, Md., died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Montgomery Hospice's Casey House in Rockville, Md. He was 77.
He was born May 23, 1926, in Portland, Ore., to Claus John Breier Jr. and Nell Roberts Breier. He was the grandson of Claus John (C.J.) Breier Sr., founder of the Breier Building in downtown Lewiston and C.J. Breier department stores. John graduated in 1944 from Lewiston High School. He also graduated in 1950 from Stanford University in California and 1954 from Stanford University Business School.
After high school, John served in Korea with the U.S. Army.
John worked as a reporter for the Lewiston Morning Tribune during summers in the late 1940s. After graduation from college in 1954, he went to work for IBM. He worked in sales of main frame computers in northern California out of the San Francisco office. In 1960, he moved to Bethesda. He retired from IBM after 35 years as a systems analyst and manager in the federal systems division.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Marian Breier of Bethesda; one daughter, Loren Dancer of Philomath, Ore.; four sons, Eric of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kurt of the home, Mark of Los Altos Hills, Calif., and Todd of Kaohsiung, Taiwan; and seven grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to a local hospice.
