Mary Jane Roberts, Pioneer of West Is Called At 82
Mary Jane Roberts, 82, wife of Andrew M. Roberts, pioneer of the west, died yesterday at 4 at her home, 1441 Idaho street, of bronchial pneumonia which heart and kidney complication. The body is at the Vassar-Rawls mortuary awaiting funeral arrangements.

On April 16, Mr. and Mrs. Roberts would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Roberts was born May 18, 1856 in Clay county, Kentucky.

Native Kentuckians, though their ancestors were Virginians with revolutionary war records, Mr. and Mrs. Roberts and three children came west in 1879, stopping at Sacramento after an 11-day trip on an emigrant train. After a short stay in California, they came north by boat to Portland, then a city of 20,000.

They spent four years in the vicinity of Eugene and then again migrated to eastern Oregon, going through McKenzie Pass in a wagon train. Taking up a homestead in John Day country, they remained there 11 years before the wanderlust took them to Dayton, where Mr. Roberts opened a meat business. A Year later he opened a general merchandise store in Asotin. Two more years found them in Pierce City, where Roberts opened another general store in a new brick building he had constructed. In 1909 the business was sold and Mr. and Mrs. Roberts removed to Kamiah, where a hotel and bank were erected.

In 1911 Mr. Roberts sold the hotel and bank and they moved to Lewiston, where they have since made their home. Mr. Roberts Has not ____ actively in business since that time, but cares for his land in ____ and investments.

Four of the eight surviving children were at the bedside when death came: Mrs. Ed Turner, Mohler; ____McCarthy, Ontario, Ore.; Mrs. Breier, Jr. and Mrs. Wallace ____, Clarkston; Margaret D’Avis, San Jose, Calif., is expected to come Thursday and a son, George, ____ from Spokane. Other children are: Mrs. E.S. Friend, Dinuba, California, Dan Roberts, Everett.
