ELENORA SPANGLER EXPIRES IN LIZTONWELL KNOWN WOMAN WAS 85 YEARS OLD
Mrs. Elenora (Webb) Spangler, age 84 years, 10 months and 23 days, died at her home near Lizton Friday morning at 12:30 am. Born near Meadows of Dan, Virginia, 11 November 1861, Mrs. Spangler was the daughter of Henry and Susan (Shelor) Webb. She was married 13 January 1880 at Mt. Airy, North Carolina, to Franklin P. Spangler, who survives.
Mr. and Mrs. Spangler resided near Meadows of Dan, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia, until 1896 when they moved to Indiana, locating near Lizton. They are the parents of eleven children, nine of whom are living. Mrs. Spangler won statewide recognition a few years ago with her demonstrations of carding wool and spinning. She appeared at numerous centennial celebrations and public gatherings. She gave a demonstration before the pupils of the James E. Roberts School in Indianapolis using spinning wheels more than 100 years old. At the centennial celebration of the Hope Well Church near Franklin, the Historical Society of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sent a representative to make moving pictures of the spinning. The pictures were shown from coast to coast and, when they were shown in Indianapolis, Mrs. Spangler attended. She was quite thrilled that modern science made it possible for her to see herself in action.
Mrs. Spangler recalled vividly the days of the Civil War, when, as a small child, in her Virginia home, she would hide under the bed when the soldiers passed by.
Mrs. Spangler was the last survivor of a family of twelve. Her twin brother died at the age of sixty-nine.
Mrs. Spangler is survived by four sons and five daughters: Conally Spangler of near Lizton, Mrs. Victoria Heckathorn, Mrs. SUSIE ISLEY of Jamestown; Mrs. Nettie Burgin, Charles Spangler, Thomas T. Spangler all of Indianapolis; Mrs. Harriet Gross, Mrs. Lena Cummings and Martin Spangler all of California, Mrs. Florence Brush and Mrs. Ella Poland are deceased. Two of the eleven children were born on Mr. and Mrs. Spangler's wedding date, 13 January. There are thirty three grandchildren and thirty six great-grandchildren.
Nine grandsons and three granddaughters served in World War II. One grandson was shot down in combat over Japan.
Mrs. Spangler was a member of the Christian Church at Lizton.Funeral services were held in the Lizton Church Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. Pifer.
