Marriages Solemnized in the State of Ohio Mr. Ziba Hinkle & Miss Abigail Hayes were duly married by me in Dayton Ohio on this 25th day of May 1851. The above, was the first marriage ceremony at which I officiated in Ohio. And really, I concluded that life in the west had some peculiarities. My first wedding in Ohio was peculiar. The bride-groom was a man nearly 50 years of age. He called upon me to engage my services on the preceeding day – Seatted himself & talked of general matters for a time, & then by a very noticeable effort, drew his chair near mine & said with much embarassment "I want to see you on a certain occasion" I told him he could see me if the occasion was proper etc. He finally stated that he wanted me to marry – asked if I ever trusted a man for such a service. I told him I never had, & added that such services were generally paid for at the time. He said money was hard to be procured he was anxious to get married & if I would marry him, he would see me well paid Not knowing but the old timer might have special reasons for being married I consented to perform the ceremony. He said he would come to my house the next morning at 7 o,clock. The next morning before I had risen from bed & more than an hour before I expected any one, I heard a loud alarm at the door resembling somewhat the clatter which a New England Stage driver makes
page 64
when in a hurry to raise a passenger. My wife answered the call & found the wedding party at the door She let them in, & I drest & went down as soon as possible The intended bride, contrary to my expectations was tall & gaunt, without signs of corpulencey & about as verdant looking a female as you could find in any back woods country. She was probably the child of white parents, but a superfluity of bile had given to her complexion a golden hue, not unlike the appearance of a ham just out of the smoke house. I married them. They attended church in the evening, since which time I have not seen them or the fee.
