Notes for Alma Paulina Emilie FRIESE
Alma Paulina Emilie Friese, known in most records as Pauline Friese, was born in Arlington Heights about a year after her parents and brother William immigrated to the United States. Her name has appeared in census records as Orlena, Pauline, Plana and Paulina. She attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights.
She first married William A. Alberts in 1886, the same year that her father died. She had five children with William, all born in Cook County. The family is living in Arlington Heights in 1900. Interesting that Pauline’s second husband, Henry Kuhs is also living with them. William committed suicide, according to a descendant in 1901. In an article from the Herald, dated right after his death date: “Mrs. Wm. Alberts came out from Chicago Wednesday and packed up her goods ready for shipment to the city, where she has secured a position for herself and little girl. The two children she had with her came down with the measles and she could not come out before.”
Pauline married Henry Kuhs between 1901 and 1903 and had one child with him. They moved to Allegan County, Michigan by 1903 when their daughter Myrtle was born. They lived in Allegan County, in varying locations at least until the 1930 census. It is presumed that they moved to Grand Rapids in Kent County before 1932, when Henry died and is listed in the Grand Rapids Death Index, but Pauline is listed back in Allegan in the 1940 census.
