Notes for Jan Pieterse HARING
The immigrant ancestor of the Haring/Herring family in New York and New Jersey was Pieter Jansen Haring who probably emigrated with his young son, Jan Pietersen Haring, from Hoorn, The Netherlands to America in the 1630s.
Jan Pieterse Haring and Margrietje Cosyns, his wife, lived on a 100-acre farm adjoining his father-in-law, Cosyn Gerritsen (who was a prominent farmer and wheelwright), in the settlement called the Bouwery in New Amsterdam. The farm extended from the Bouwery Lane westward to beyond Bedford St., both sides of Broadway. "Jan Pieterszen Hearing" joined the NYC Reformed Church 28 Oct 1668. He was one of the chief promoters in the purchase of the Tappan Patent in what is now Rockland County, NY, and owned the largest share (3/16ths) in that enterprise. Jan Pieterse Haring did not live to settle on the Tappan land, but his wife and four sons took up his shares and founded the prolific family to follow. The Harings settled in what was called the "Old Tappan" part of the patent, later in New Jersey when the state line divided it approximately in half.
