Notes for Jane DOMINY
Trying to follow this cousin through all the name changes has been a real challenge. When I was first researching the George Johnson/Johnston family and looking at notes from the family, I had this cousin as Jane Dominy. However, to my surprise I found that her mother, my great-grandaunt Marie, had been married before her marriage to Earl Dominy. Marie first married John S. Fairgrieve in Chicago 14 Sep 1905. They were divorced before 1910 when I finally found Marie in Allegan County, Michigan, working as a divorced hired girl in the William D. Porter household. She had a daughter, Jennie Fairgrieve, age 3, with her.

Jane, as she was known most of her life, was born 15 November 1906 in Chicago under the name Virginia Anna Fairgrieve after Marie’s sister. As stated before she was known as Jennie Fairgrieve in the 1910 census. By the 1920 census, her mother had remarried to Earl Dominy in 1916 and Jane is listed as a Dominy with Earl’s daughters, Laura and Ethylyn, from his previous marriage. The family always said that Earl had adopted Jane as his own daughter. I have not found evidence to corroborate this as yet.

On 16 January 1929 Jane was married to Willis J. McCarthy as Jane Fairgrieve. She was listed as daughter of John Fairgrieve and Marie Johnson. They were married in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They were listed in the 1930 census as Willis McCarthy and Jane McCarthy. Jane divorced Willis in 1932 with the cause listed as cruelty. She was very fortunate to get out of this marriage. In 1941 Willis McCarthy killed his second wife with a shotgun in the middle of a cathedral full of people going to Mass. He died in jail in 1946 serving a life term for the murder.

Jane remarried 24 September 1938 to John N. Garvelink in Allegan County, Michigan. The marriage documents list her as Jane Fairgrieve McCarthy or Jane McCarthy Fairgrieve. They are listed in the 1940 census in Holland, Michigan as John and Jane Garvelink. This was the marriage that lasted. They remained married until John had a heart attack and died in 1969. They had no children.
