Notes for Ferdinandus VAN SICLEN
Ferdinandus came to New Amsterdam in 1652 at the age of 17. He stayed there a year or so and then settled in Flatlands, Long Island. He soon had a large farm and was doing a profitable business.
With his sons, he established a market and fair in Brooklyn, patterned after town fairs in the Netherlands. On fair days the grounds about the market were covered with booths, tents and Indian wigwams. Neighboring farmhouses held open hospitality. In the afternoon and evening there was music and dancing.
