Miss Chlo Fink Dies in Columbus, Georgia
Alumni of Sikeston high school whose diplomas bear dates between 1911 and 1917 will be shocked to hear that one of their best-loved teachers – Miss Chlo Fink died Wednesday in Columbus, Ga.
Miss Fink, a graduate of the University of Missouri, in addition to teaching in the local high school, taught at Fulton, Mo.; Shreveport, La.,; Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. and Pfeiffer College, Meisenheimer, N.C.. After being on the Winthrop College staff for some 30 years, Miss Chlo retired two years ago and went to Columbus Ga., to make her home with her sister, Mrs. Marjorie Duncan.
Miss Fink numbered among her pupils during her years here many of those who have become Sikeston’s leading citizens and, while here made her home with Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Bess and Miss Isabel Bess remembers her as one of her closest friends.
While generations of high school graduates here, since her time, never had the privilege of personal acquaintance with Miss Chlo, as her own pupils knew her, not a graduating class and no gridiron victory by the local students passes without the singing of “The Red and Black”, Sikeston high school’s official song and for which Miss Chlo wrote the words.
Although Miss Fink leaves many close friends and admirers for her splendid services to Sikeston children, she has only one living relative here – Mrs. William Bess, a niece.
Other surviving relatives include her sister, Mrs. Marjorie Duncan, also a former resident of Sikeston, now living in Columbus, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. R. M. Scott of Union, Mo., and a brother, Cmdr. B.W. Fink, retired, USN of Fairlin//, Virginia.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Trinity Episcopal church at Columbus, Gs. Friday morning.
