H.M. Wahl Dies From Gun Shot
Well-Known Bremen Monument Dealer Succumbs To Self-Inflicted Shot; Lives for Eighteen Hours
Harman M. Wahl, well-known Bremen monument dealer and sportsman, died at St. Joseph hospital in Mishawaka early Monday morning from a self-inflicted shotgun wound which he received Sunday morning at his marble shop on East Plymouth street.
Between eight and nine o’clock Sunday morning Mr. Wahl left a note in his bedroom and started for his place of business. Just after the shot had been fired, Raymond Brougher passed the monument store and found Mr. Wahl, still conscious, with a wound in his left side. The charge had entered his body just below the heart. Brougher assisted the wounded man to the office of Dr. W.D. Buchanan, just two doors east of the Wahl shop, where Dr. Buchanan and Dr. R.H. Draper gave first aid and then sent the injured man in the Huff ambulance to Mishawaka. He retained consciousness and lived until 2:20 oclock [sic] Monday morning.
The notes left by Mr. Wahl for his wife gave the strain of business worries as the cause of his rash act. According to his last message, unfair methods and tactics by competitors, either actual or imaginary, caused him to worry to such an extent that he had decided he could stand the strain no longer.
Mr. Wahl was well known in this community, where he had spent his entire life and where he had always been active in community affairs. He served at one time as a member of the town board of trustees and was a leader in the conservation club at the time of his death.
Harman M. Wahl was born at Woodland, Indiana, March 6, 1874, and died at the Mishawaka hospital October 22, 1934, at the age of sixty years, seven months and sixteen days. He had lived in Bremen almost all of his life.
In June, 1898, he was united in marriage with Ella Kanegar, who preceded him in death sixteen years ago. Two sons were born to them, both of whom survive. On Sept. 16, 1922, he was married to Mrs. Addie Green who also survives with their one son, Billie.
Mr. Wahl had always been active in the business and civic affairs of his community and was a leader in many activities. He was a former member of the Kiwanis club, the Izaak Walton League, and other civic organizations. He was a member of the conservation club and was always much interested in outdoor life of all kinds. He belonged to the Masonic orders and the Mystic Shrine.
Surviving with the widow are his three sons: Richard Wahl of of Elizabeth, New Jersey; Robert Wahl of Bremen; and Billie Wahl at home. He leaves also one stepson, Forrest Green of Lakeville. There are four sisters and one brother: Mrs. Ida Finch of Walkerton, Mrs. William C. Foltz, Mrs. Charles E. Koontz and Mrs. Bertha Felden of Bremen; and Martin Wahl of Boston, Mass. He leaves three grandchildren: Patricia, Richard Junior, and Jeraldine Wahl; and a large number of relatives more remote.
Funeral services were held at the home on West Plymouth street Wednesday afternoon, Rev. H.P. Bloesch of First Evangelical church officiating. Burial was in the Bremen cemetery. The local Masonic lodge had charge of the service at the cemetery.
