Obituary notes for Michael WAHL
The Bremen Enquirer, 27 March 1919, page 1
Michael Wahl Died
Tuesday After Forty-Three Years of Patient Invalidism
Michael Wahl, whose critical condition was mentioned last week, died at 1:30 Tuesday afternoo [sic] at the family home in Bremen at the age of 83 years and 17 days. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 10 oclock [sic] Saturday morning by Rev. A.J. Radley, until recently pastor of the Congregational church, who returns from Illinois to conduct the service. Interment will be in the Bremen cemetery.
Michael Wahl was born in Alsace March 8, 1836. When a child three years old he came to America with his parents. The family settled first in Stark county, Ohio, but soon after, in 1843, came to St. Joseph county. Dec. 30, 1858, deceased was united in marriage with Mary Fink at Woodland. Esquire Anthony performed the ceremony. Forty-two years ago they came to Bremen and have lived here ever since. Their married life together covered a period of sixty years and almost three months. Mr. Wahl was for some time engaged in the mercantile business, served as a member of the town board, and engaged in various occupations.
Forty-three years ago, while threshing on the Anthony Albert farm; three miles east of Wyatt. Mr. Wahl was caught in the tumbling shaft of the old fashioned horse-power and frightfully crushed. For three days physicians declared it useless to attempt to do anything for his wounds, as he could not recover. He survived his hurts, but has ever since been an invalid, for the past dozen years able to get about but little and with great difficulty. It is the testimony of all who knew him that he bore his suffering with a patiece [sic] and fortitude that was astonishing, never being heard to utter a word of complaint.
Surviving are the companion of more than sixty years and six of the eight children born to them - Mrs. Ida Finch of Walkerton, Mrs. E.C. Foltz, Mrs. C.E. Koontz, H.M. Wahl, and Mrs. Bertha Felden of Bremen and Martin Wahl of Boston. Two children preceded him, a daughter dying in infancy, and the eldest son, Dr. George F. Wahl, three months ago. Twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive him.
