Body of Former Prominent Resident Was Brought
Dr. George F. Wahl
Died Friday at the Home of his daughter in Champaign, Ill. - Funeral Services Conducted at Home of Sister Here Monday
Dr. George F. Wahl, whose critical condition from Bright’s disease and whose removal from Chattanooga, Tenn., to her home in Champaign, Ill., by his daughter, Mrs. Hal Hayes, were briefly noted last week, died Friday a short time after reaching his daughter’s home. The body was accompanied here Saturday night by Mrs. Wahl, their son Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Hayes and little son and taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Koontz, where it lay until Monday forenoon, when funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.J. Radley of the Congregational church. Interment followed in the Bremen cemetery.
George Franklin Wahl, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wahl of Bremen, who both survive him, was born in Madison township, St. Joseph county, a few miles north of Bremen, April 23, 1859, and would have been sixty years old next April. Following preparation in the schools here, Valparaiso University and Rush medical college he practiced medicine in and about Bremen for a number of years. He also conducted a drug store, and was a director in the Union state bank, a member of the school board, superintendent of what is now the Holland plant of the American Radiator co. and was prominent in many of the affairs of this community.
Dr. Wahl was first married to Miss Ella Dietrich, sister of Peter E. and the late John R. Dietrich. One daughter was born to them, Mrs. Hal Hayes of Champaign, Ill. Following the death of his first wife, Dr. Wahl was united in marriage with Miss Ella Huffman. One son, Franklin, was born to them and with the wife survives.
About nine years ago Dr. Wahl closed out his business interests here and entered upon the manufacture of step-ladders in South Bend. Later he went to western Canada and engaged with others in the manufacture of marmalades on a rather large scale. Still later he went to Chattanooga, Tenn., where he has since engaged in the practice of medicine, in company until the death of the latter with the late Dr. W.A. Dietrich. Some two years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, since which time from its effect, augmented by the ravages of Bright’s disease his health has steadily failed until the end came Friday.
