Marion Cahlan, Former Teacher Dies in ‘Vegas
Mrs. Marion Edmunds Cahlan, who taught many leading Nevadans their three Rs during a long career in the public schools, died Tuesday in a Las Vegas hospital.
Mrs. Cahlan was born in Virginia City in 1875, attended the Virginia City schools and was one of the first graduates at the University of Nevada Normal School. Later she taught in Reno, Sparks and Las Vegas.
After the death of her husband, Bert Cahlan, she moved to Las Vegas where her two sons, Albert and John, were associated with the Las Vegas Review Journal. Last December she was honored when a new elementary school was named for her in Las Vegas.
Mrs. Cahlan took an active part in Reno civic and social life a number of years ago. She was a past matron of Adah Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, was a member of the Twentieth Century Club and a founder of the first parent-teacher clubs in Reno.
Survivors besides her two sons are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Alice Sauer of Washoe Valley.
