Albert Cahlan Dies in Vegas

Albert E. Cahlan, veteran Nevada newspaperman, died today in Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital in Las Vegas after suffering a stroke, The Associated Press reported.

Cahlan had spent 45 years in the newspaper business, most of that time in Las Vegas. He was for many years part owner of the Las Vegas Review Journal, and after the newspaper was sold he became associated with the Las Vegas Sun, writing a human interest column called: “From Where I Sit.”

NEVADAN AWARD
Cahlan received the Distinguished Nevadan award at the University of Nevada commencement exercises in 1958. He was Democratic floor leader of the Assembly in the 1933 Nevada Legislature, was chairman of the Democratic National Committeeman for Nevada from 1946 to 1952.

For many years chairman of the Las Vegas Planning Commission, he also served two terms as a member of the Colorado River Commission. He was a member of the Las Vegas Board of Education for six years and was also a member of the city planning commission.

He was a member of the Greater Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, was commander of the Nevada Department of the American Legion in 1930-31, and was listed in “Who’s Who in America.” He was a past president of the Las Vegas Rotary Club and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies of Nevada and Kerak Temple of the Shrine. He was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

PLANT ACQUIRED
During his terms of service on the Colorado River Commission the huge Basic Magnesium Inc. plant at Henderson was acquired by the State of Nevada from the federal government.

Cahlan was born in Reno, April 8, 1899, the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Cahlan. His father was associated with the state highway department for many years and his mother taught in the Reno schools. When the elder Mr. Cahlan died she moved to Las Vegas. She died in 1966. His grandfather came to northern Nevada on a covered wagon.

Cahlan attended grad school in Carson and graduated from Reno High School in 1916. He received his bachelor of science degree in engineering from the University of Nevada in 1920. During his university days he was business manager of the student newspaper, “The Sagebrush.”

He went to Las Vegas in 1921 as a member of the faculty, teaching mathematics in the high school and coaching athletics. In 1922 he became editor and manager of the Elko Free Press, and he returned to Las Vegas in 1926 when Frank Garside acquired the old Las Vegas Review. He became a partner in the expanding newspaper enterprise which became the Review Journal and which became a daily in 1928. During the years after the business boom occasioned by the building of Hoover Dam faded, he coined the phrase: “Don’t Sell Las Vegas Short.” He and Garside sold the newspaper to the Don Reynolds media group in 1961.

Surviving are his widow, the former Ruth Schuyler, whom he married in Las Vegas in 1922; a son, J Forest Cahlan; a brother, John Managing director of the Southern Nevada Industrial Foundation, all of Las Vegas, and a daughter, Mrs. Milton Henderson of Iowa.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Palm Mortuary.
