JEAN SAUER FRY

JEAN SAUER FRY is a third generation native Nevadan. She was a twin daughter of Edmonds Sauer who was born in Washoe City, Nevada, and Alice Edmonds Sauer who was born in Virginia City. Jean's paternal grandfather, Andrew Sauer, was one of the first settlers in Virginia City, Nevada, during the silver and gold rush in the 1860's.
Jean Sauer Fry attended Nevada schools and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1934. She was an active member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. After graduation, Jean Sauer became a school teacher in Franktown, Nevada. She taught all grades through junior high school in this country school and was also the school janitor. She next taught school at Overton, Nevada, where she met Leslie M. Fry. Later she taught home economics at the old Northside School in Reno.
Jean Sauer married Leslie M. Fry in Albert Cahlan's home in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 2, 1936. She moved to the midwest when Leslie Fry entered law school in Louisville, Kentucky. She returned to Nevada during W.W.II while her husband was serving overseas.
Jean Sauer Fry was active in community and civic activities. She served as president of the YWCA in 1950 and in state and national positions with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. These included president of the Department of Nevada Ladies Auxiliary in 1971 through 1972; National VFW Ladies Auxiliary Community Activities Director in 1969; and the National VFW Loyalty Day Director in 1967.
She was a volunteer with the Lougaris Veterans Administration Hospital in Reno and generously gave time and services to Washoe Legal Aid.
Jean Sauer Fry was an active member with the Daughters of the Nile. She traveled throughout the world with her husband meeting various presidents, senators, dignitaries and foreign leaders.
Leslie M. Fry and Jean Sauer Fry were married for 57 years. They witnessed three wars and a transition from horse and buggy days to the space shuttle. They had five children, all of whom graduated from college: Leslie Mack Fry, deceased, graduated from UNR in 1959, from Boalt Law School, Berkeley, California, in 1961, and served as an assemblyman in the Nevada State Legislature from 1969 to 1974; Lyne Mallett graduated from UNR in 1962 and taught school in Livermore, California; Sally Woyciehowsky graduated from UNR in 1985; Robert J. Fry graduated from UNR in 1972, from McGeorge Law School in 1978 and received his LLM in Business and Taxation from McGeorge Law School in 1983; Stanley Preston Fry, deceased, graduated from Colorado State, Ft. Collins, Colorado, in 1974, and from Northwestern Medical School, Chicago, Illinois, in 1978, and received his medical degree prior to his untimely death in 1978.
Jean Sauer Fry is survived by two sisters, Myra Sauer Ratay and Alice Louise Lohse, three children, 16 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Jean Sauer Fry ‘34 (Home Ed) died in Reno at age 81 on Aug. 30, 1993. A Franktown, Nev., native, she was affiliated with Delta Delta Delta at Nevada, from which four of her children also graduated. She taught high school in Overton, Nev., and later at Northside Junior High School, Reno. Her husband, Attorney Leslie Fry, was Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and during his term of office they traveled all over the world as American goodwill ambassadors, meeting many heads of state. She was active in several civic organizations, serving as president of the Reno YMCA, was a charter member of the Lawyers Wives Club and Reno Lions Auxiliary, a member of Ladies Auxiliary of VFW 9211, serving as auxiliary president and state president 1970-71 and was a life member of the Officers’ Wives Club of Reno. Memorials are being established with the VFW Auxiliary cancer aid and research fund or the auxiliary’s scholarship fund, 727 Balzar Circle, Reno NV, 89502.

Sauer-Fry Nuptials Held at Cahlan Home, Las Vegas
The wedding of Miss Jean Sauer, twin daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Sauer of Reno, and Lieutenant Leslie M. Fry, officer at the CCC camp at Moapa, Nevada, took place Saturday evening at six o’clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Cahlan in Las Vegas, Nev.
The single ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. Charles Dalton of the Methodist-Episcopal church. Mrs. Robert Waymire of Overton played the wedding march and Mrs. Rulon Shepherd, also of Overton, sang “I Love You Truly” accompanied by Mrs. Waymire.
The bride wore a gown of white net fashioned with a full pleated skirt, train and long puffed sleeves over white satin. A corsage of pink roses completed the costume.
Miss Faun Ivins of Overton was bridesmaid. She wore blue organza with a corsage of camelias and Patty Jones was flower girl. Her costume was of blue lace and she carried an old fashioned nosegay.
Dr. John F. Curry of Moapa attended the bridegroom.
Following the ceremony a reception was held for the wedding guests. Those bidden included Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Cahlan, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Cahlan, Mr. and Mrs. Lorraine Ivins, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Waymire, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jones.
Also Lieut. and Mrs. Miller Christensen, Dr. and Mrs. John F. Curry, Mrs. W.F. Sauer, Mrs. Marion Cahlan, Mr. Rulon Shepherd, Mrs. Ella Perkins, Mrs. Agnes Anderson, Miss Amy Edmunds.

The bride was graduated from the University of Nevada with the class of 1934 and is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and Sigma Sigma, national home economics fraternity. She is a member of a pioneer Nevada family and received her early education in the Reno schools. For the past year she has been teaching home economics at Overton, Nev.
The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. O.M. Fry of Louisiana, Mo., and attended the University of Missouri where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Lieut. and Mrs. Fray [sic] will spend the summer at Yellowstone National Park, following which they will go to Columbia, Mo., where Lieut. Fry will take his senior year in the School of Law of the University of Missouri.
