William Sauer Dies in Reno

One of the oldest residents of Washoe Valley, William F. Sauer, died Friday morning in a Reno hospital.

Born in Washoe City in 1878, he was the last surviving son of Andrew and Catherine Sauer, who came to Nevada from Germany in 1859.

After attending the University of Nevada in Reno, Sauer went into partnership in ranching with his brother Frank. In 1907 he married Alice Edmunds, a Virginia City school teacher, and they built a home near Bowers mansion. In later years Sauer sold his ranch holdings and retired to a small home at Franktown. Here he started an orchard which became famous for its golden delicious apples.

A private funeral service will be held today in the O’Brien Rogers Chapel. Cremation and burial in Mountain View Cemetery will follow.

Surviving Sauer besides his widow are his four daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Leary of San Francisco, Mrs. Myra Ratay of Denver, Mrs. Jean Fry and Mrs. Alice Lohse of Reno, 14 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Nevadans Married
At Butte City, Montana
Miss Alice Edmunds Becomes the Wife of Mr. Wm. Sauer of Washoe Valley
Two well known Nevada people were made happy at Butte City, Montana, recently when Miss Alice Edmunds, a prominent instructor in the public schools at that place was united in marriage to Mr. William Saner [sic], a prosperous farmer of Washoe.

Mr. and Mrs. Saner [sic] have returned to Nevada and will reside at the home of the groom in Washoe Valley. They have hosts of friends in this vicinity to wish them a happy married life.

The bride is a sister of Mrs. A.W. Cahlan of Reno and a graduate of the Nevada State university. She spent her childhood in Virginia City and before going to Butte was the teacher of the North Truckee school near this city. She also taught the Washoe school, and at that time the romance commenced which culminated in the happy event at Butte. She is a young lady of high accomplishment and noble traits of mind and Mr. Saner [sic] is to be congratulated for his successful choice of such a wife.

The groom was born and raised in Nevada and was also a students at the state university. He made many many friends in Wadsworth a few years ago where he held a position with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He has resided in Reno a portion of the time during the past few years but is at present devoting his attention to his interests in Washoe valley. Wherever he is known Mr. Saner [sic] has won many friends by his sterling charcter and genial disposition.
