Obituary for Kim L. Lohse
Kim Louise Lohse

1947 - 2018

Kim Louise Lohse passed away from multiple myeloma, at the age of 71, in her home, up the Entiat Valley, WA. Born on January 5, 1947, to George and Alice Lohse in Reno, NV, Kim was the third of four siblings.

Kim graduated from Reno High School and the University of California, Davis. She resided for a year in Bonn, Germany, and four years in Toronto, Ontario, with her first husband. Kim then traveled solo to Vancouver, British Columbia, where she earned a Master of Library Science degree at the University of British Columbia. While in Vancouver, Kim developed many lasting friendships, most especially with June Dragman and Michael Szasz. She then spent several years working as a librarian in Ontario. In the 1980’s, Kim returned to the States, where she was hired as a librarian at Seattle University. She later settled in the Entiat Valley with her husband, Phil, near Wenatchee, WA, where she taught Information Literacy at Wenatchee Valley College.

During this time, Kim became actively involved in the local food movement. She fulfilled a long-held dream of opening an organic produce market, Farmhouse Table Produce. Kim took immense pride in being able to offer a place to buy quality fresh foods from local farmers. She was a passionate advocate for locally sourced produce, cheese, and meat. Kim’s store was a hub of activity and warmth, offering not just food but also an opportunity for people to learn more about the food they eat. The store also included a highly successful Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) operation.

Her love of food and its preparation was matched only by her interest in the natural world, which led to active involvement in the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust (CDLT). Kim will be sorely missed as a supporter and principled advocate for wise resource use and protection. Her commitments took root and spread throughout Central Washington, where her legacy will continue to bear fruit, long after her graceful presence and generous spirit have departed.

Kim is survived by her husband, Phil Archibald of Entiat, WA. Kim was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers: William K. Lohse, and Douglas G. Lohse. Her memory will be cherished by her Reno family: sister, Gayle de Frutos, brother-in-law, Marcelino de Frutos, and niece, Yolanda Heitzman; and her Seattle family: niece, Kristen Lohse, and husband, Britten Clark. She is also survived by nephews: Steven Lohse of Los Angeles, CA, and Jack Lohse of Maui, HI; as well as two grandnephews and a grandniece.

Her oncologist, Dr. Thomas Tucker, and radiation oncologist, Dr. Nicolas Kummer, for whom she held great fondness, extended her life and eased her pain. Kim's dear friends, Ally Neher, and palliative care nurse, Ginny Heinitz, made her last days luminous and peaceful.

Kim will be remembered for her many contributions to our community. A Memorial Service to honor her will be held in Wenatchee, WA, at a later date. Should you wish to honor her, she would ask that, in lieu of flowers or gifts, you contribute to Rhubarb Market or the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust.
