Obituaries
Freda Kornmayer McCulloch
Freda Jeanne Kornmayer McCulloch, 77, was born August 23, 1927. This loving wife, mother, aunt and Gramie passed away Saturday, June 25, 2005, after a lengthy illness, throughout which she remained in good spirits and was ever gracious, despite her discomfort.
Freda was born, raised and loved her life here in Reno. She was a 3rd generation Nevadan and the daughter of two Pioneer Nevada Families; Davis and Kornmayer who settled in Western Nevada.
She graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1950 and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, as were her four sisters. Freda met her future husband, John Shurtliff McCulloch, from Elko, Nevada, while attending UNR. They married in 1949 and shared almost 56 years together. She and John left Reno to live in Chicago for 3 years while he attended dental school, returning in 1955. Once their children were grown, Freda worked side by side with John, for 18 years, at his dental office as receptionist and assistant. They enjoyed traveling and visited many places throughout the world together and with their children.
Freda loved being at Lake Tahoe, California and saw it as her second home. She spent her summers there from the time she was a child. Tahoe held very special memories for her, first with her own siblings and then with her husband, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She found joy in being a housewife, mother, and grandmother. Freda was an extremely caring and loving woman who always put others first and foremost in her life. In later years she found pleasure in seeing her garden flowers bloom, listening to her water fountains and watching the rabbits, ducks, and a variety of birds feed outside her bedroom windows.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Frank J. Kornmayer, Sr., and Freda Davis Kornmayer, and all six of her siblings; Frank J. Kornmayer Jr., William A. Kornmayer, Margaret A. Millard, Marion Elizabeth (Betty) Tedford, Mary C. Gensman and Mardelle L. Armanino. Freda is survived by her husband, John, and their four children, son Kurt and his wife Mary, of Memphis Tennessee; daughter Kristen Stevens and her husband Randy of Reno; daughter Kerri Garcia and her husband, Cesar of Reno; son Kyle of Reno, and many other family members living in Reno, Fallon, and Lamoille, Nevada as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews throughout Western States. Freda was very proud of her grandchildren; Scott, Megan, and Michael McCulloch; Jenae and Donielle Stevens; Alec, Ian and Nayla Garcia.
Freda was loved deeply and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. We know that she is at peace and finds comfort in being with family that passed before her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Cremation will be under the direction of Reno Memorial Cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests a donation to the charity of your choice in Freda's honor.

Formal Church Ceremony For Kornmayer-McCulloch Wedding Held Here SundayMiss Freda Jeanne Kornmayer and John S. McCulloch were married last Sunday at a formal double-ring ceremony by the Rev. Earl S. Barnett of First Baptist church of which the bride has been an active member since childhood.
Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Kornmayer, Sr., of Reno, the bride was given in marriage by her brother, Frank J. Kornmayer, and had as her only attendant her sister, Miss Mardelle Kornmayer.
Mr. McCulloch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.D. McCulloch of Elko, and he is now attending the University of Nevada as a pre-dental major.
For her wedding the bride chose a gown of heavy eggshell satin made with a lace yoke and lace panel down the front of the skirt which ended in a short train. The fingertip veil of illusion was held by a tiny seed pearl crown. She wore a pearl necklace, gift of the bridegroom, and for something old she wore an engagement ring which had belonged to her maternal grandmother. The traditional blue garter of Delta Delta Delta sorority was her something blue and the bridal bouquet was of white orchids in crescent shape with stephanotis.
Her sister as maid of honor wore wine and pink faille made with a hoop-skirt and bertha collar. Matching wine and pink chrysanthemums fashioned her crown and bouquet.
Two little flower girls, Trudy and Janis Tedford, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. K.H. Tedford of Fallon and nieces of the bride, wore long dresses of pink and wine made in a fashion similar to the maid of honor’s gown. They wore rosebud crowns and carried baskets of rose petals.
Best man was David Kinneberg of Battle Mountain, while William Kornmayer, brother of the bride, and Fred Muller, John Sullivan and William Plummer, jr., Alpha Tau Omega fraternity brothers of the bridegroom were ushers.
The church was decorated with large baskets of white chrysanthemums against banks of hucklyberry foliage and fern with tall white tapers in candelabra. Mrs. LeRoy Booth sang “Through the Years,” accompanied at the organ by Miss Betty McEwen who also played the traditional wedding marches.
A reception at the Twentieth Century club building followed the ceremony, where decorations featured baskets of chrysanthemums, and the bride’s table was centered with a three-tiered wedding cake topped with wedding bells and surrounded by a lei of white carnations and gardenia. The knife with which the cake was cut in traditional fashion was tied with a white satin bow with sprigs of stephanotis knotted in the streamers. Miss Anna Bee Wallace assisted in serving, and Miss Phyliss Green was in charge of the guest book.
Mrs. Frank J. Kornmayer, sister-in-law of the bride, wore for the wedding a gray suit with gray accessories and an orchid corsage. Mrs. Tedford, sister of the bride, wore a black afternoon dress with seqin [sic] trim and orchids. Mrs. McCulloch, mother of the bridegroom, chose a gray afternoon frock with which she wore a pink satin hat. She also wore an orchid corsage.
Flowers used in decorating the church and clubrooms for the reception were arranged by Mrs. Eileen Elliott of Oakland, aunt of the bride.
Mr. and Mrs. McCullcoh left immediately following the reception for a west coast honymoon trip, and the bride chose for traveling a suit of burgundy gabardine with which she wore gray accessories. They will make their home at 221 1/2 West Third street in Reno while Mr. McCulloch completes his college work at the University of Nevada.
The new Mrs. McCulloch is a senior student at the University of Nevada and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She is active in Eastern Star and the Women’s Recreation association on the campus.
Among the out-of-town guest at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Wiley of Nevada City; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Millard and children Marsha and David of Ely; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Tedford and daughter, Janis and Trudy of Fallon; Mr. and Mrs. A.D. McCulloch of Elko; Mrs. Eileen Elliot of Oakland; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shurtliff, Mrs. C.J. Shurtliff, Miss R.E. Agren, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Liljenquist and Val and Ray Liljenquist of Salt Lake City.
