William L. Reid, 70, vice president and general manager of Lima Locomotive Works, Inc. died at 5 p.m. Saturday in St. Rita’s hospital. He became suddenly ill with an intestinal disorder several days ago and submitted to an operation Friday.
Reid, who was recognized as one of the leading authorities on locomotive building in the United States, had been head of the local plant since 1918. He rose to the top in his profession without the aid of a formal technical education.
He is survived by a daughter and four sons. They are Miss Elizabeth Reid, who lived with her father at 430 S. Cole st; William H. Reid, 1116 W. Market st; Leslie Reid, 314 S. Rosedale av; John I. Reid, of Rochester, N.Y.; and Dr. Ralph D. Reid, of Schenectady, N.Y.
Reid also leaves a sister, Mrs. Charles Sickles, of Paterson, N.J., and three brothers, James A. Reid and Charles Reid, both of Schenectady, and John C. Reid, of Brooklyn.
Funeral services will be conducted at the home here at 3 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Cornelius Nicholas Bakker, and the body will be taken to Paterson for burial. Additional services will be held there at the home of Mrs. Sickles Wednesday.
NATIVE OF PATERSON
Reid was born in Paterson, where he obtained his elementary and high school education. Shortly after leaving school, he was employed by the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works at Paterson. From then on his entire business life had to do with locomotive building. At the Rogers plant, where his father had been general foreman, Reid became superintendent in 1893. He held this position for nine years and then became assistant superintendent for the Brooks Locomotive Works. Within two years he was advanced to the superintendency.
After serving only 20 days as superintendent of the Brooks plant, he was appointed superintendent of the Schenectady works of the American Locomotive Co. He resigned from this company in 1917 to become general manager of the National Brake and Electric Co., at Milwaukee.
Six months later he became general superintendent of the Baldwin Locomotive Works at Eddystone, Pa. He remained in that position until he was elected vice president of the Lima Locomotive Works in 1918.
STUDENT OF ASTRONOMY
Reid was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and recently was voted to life membership in that organization. He also was a member of the Transportation club of New York. In addition to his business interests, Reid was actively interested in astronomy and was widely know as an authority on the science.
A member of the Market Street Presbyterian church since his arrival in this city, Reid was an able Bible student. He was a member of the Shawnee country club and was one of the original members of the Lima Club and at one time was a member of the Elks club.
The body will be taken from the Davis, Miller and Son mortuary to the residence Sunday.
