Eugene Alhart, hardware store owner, dies at 90
Eugene G. Alhart, retired Rochester businessman and community leader, died at his Brighton home on Christmas Day at the age of 90.
Mr. Alhart operated Alhart’s Appliance and Hardware on Culver Road with his three brothers, Clarence, Richard and Robert, for 52 years.
Richard Alhart died on De. 15.
Eugene Alhart was a 1928 graduate of the University of Rochester and was very active in the community. He had been an active member of the Rochester Rotary Club since 1939, and was twice named a Paul Harris Fellow, the second time on his 90th birthday in 1995.
Mr. Alhart served as Vice President of the International Society of Christian Endeavor and was president of the state chapter.
He was an active member of the Gideons until the day he died, helping to distribute Bibles to churches, hotels, schools and prisons.
He was also past president of Allied Forces Inc., a group of concerned citizens working to educate youth on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
More than 350 friends and relatives attended a memorial service on Dec. 31 at the Trinity Reformed Church, where he was a lifelong member.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois; daughter Shirley Lenox of Fairport: sons David of Palos Verdes, Calif., and Don of Penfield, an anchorman at WOKR-TV, Channel 13; and 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
