BURNED TO DEATH
A Sad Accident to a Child on Park Avenue
Mary Rooney, the one-year-old daughter of Mrs. James Rooney of 49 Park avenue, was seriously burned yesterday afternoon while at play. Mrs. Rooney left the child together with the little boy three years of age in the kitchen while she went down stairs to get from crackers for Mary. She had not been gone many minutes when she heard the boy scream, and on running up stairs found little Mary enveloped in flames. With the assistance of some passersby who heard the scream, Mrs. Rooney extinguished the flames, but not before the child had been badly burned about the face, arms and back. Dr. B. H. Rogers was hurriedly summoned, and he did what he could to relieve the Pain. It seems that the boy found some matches a few days ago and kept them in his pocket until yesterday afternoon, when, during his mother’s brief absence, he struck one and st fire to some paper on the floor. The child was sitting near and her clothes soon daughter fire, with the result stated above.
The child died at 11 o’clock last night.
