Death of James A. Rooney

A Prominent Citizen and Well Known Builder Passes Away After a Very Brief Illness

The death of James A. Rooney at his home 49 Park avenue, yesterday morning, is mourned by a wide circle of friends. There was no better known builder in the city. He was universally liked, and though a man of quiet disposition, his unassuming nature gained for him th [sic] friendship of all with whom he came in contact. Mr. Rooney is a native of this city, having been born in a house which occupied the site where now stands the late residence of the deceased. When a young man he learned the business of mason and builder from his uncle, the late Hugh Rooney, and subsequently entered into partnership with him. Under the firm name of H. & J.A. Rooney they carried on an extensive business for many years. During this time they did much to build up the city, and in every section of the town may be found monuments, so to speak, of their careful supervision and workmanship. Few builders have done more for Paterson than they. Mr. Rooney succeeded his partner at the latter’s death and carried on the business with marked success up to the time of his last sickness. A short time ago he contracted a cold while out on business and was soon afterward confined to his home, pneumonia having set in. He battled with the disease manfully, but his system, though strong, was not sufficient to cope with the malady that held him down.

The deceased will be deeply mourned by his employes, to whom he had endeared himself by his upright and impartial treatment. Esteeming himself he won the esteem of others, and his loss will be the greater to them. Besides innumerable friends, the deceased leaves a wife and two children to mourn the departure of one who could not well be spared.
