Notes for Abraham G. POST
The original information I had on this ancestor is inaccurate. Dutch descendants used patronymics until the English took over the colonies. They then adopted surnames, but kept the patronymics as middle names. By virtue of DNA Abraham is connected to Cornelius G. Post. There are 2 possibilities that many researchers have latched onto. Because the middle initial is G, the father is probably Gerrit. Because there were no male children it is harder to see if the patronymic naming was followed with Abraham and Hannah’s children, although several of Hannah’s siblings names appear.
The questions come when it was discovered that there were 2 Gerrit Posts in the area during the time period in question, Gerrit A. And Gerrit C. In some instances they have been combined giving that one man 2 wives. There are plenty of land records to discount this as “Gerrit Post” had land transactions with both of the women in the same time period. Most research indicates that Gerrit A. Post married Helena Manning and Gerrit C. Post married Margaret Vreeland.
I believe that the correct Gerrit is one Gerrit A. Post who presumably married Helena Manning. The DNA match is with a descendant of Cornelius G. Post presumably a brother of Abraham. There are no church records for Abraham, only the Bible record probably because there are missing church records from this time and location due to fire.
He joined 2nd Reformed Church 1842, and Hannah joined 1840.
