Mary H. French’s parents are thought to be Miles French and Margaret Ann Carney. This is possibly her: M. H. French, female, age 7, in the 1850 census for Union County, Kentucky, in the house of Joel and Nancy Short. Mary appears again in 1860, age 16, with Nancy Short (wrongly indexed Mort) and the same Joel C. French as appeared with her in 1850. An Ancestry user noted that Nancy Short, maiden name Sigler, was mother of Jacob Carney/Kerney in the censuses.

R.N. French posted the marriage bond for Mary in 1866 upon her marriage to John W. Hogan 28 February 1866 at the home of Robert Hogan. R.N. and Mary are close in age, so I am surmising that this could be her brother. A lot of trees have Robert Newton as a son of Miles and Peggy. She is said to be 23 years old at the time of the marriage, born in Union County, Kentucky.

It appears this couple had 7 children, 5 of whom appear in the 1880 census. Then her husband, John W. Hogan, a veteran of the Civil War as crew on a steamer, probably dies between 1890 1891. By tracking the known children of John and Mary, it became apparent that Mary H. (French) Hogan married again to Jesse Lawrence who died before 1900. In 1891 Mary has filed a remarried widow notice with the Civil War Pensions. The only marriage that seems to fit with this is an 1893 marriage of Jesse W. Lawrence and Mrs. Mary H. Hogan in Gallatin County, Illinois. It is not known why the dates of the remarried widow notice and the marriage listed do not correspond more closely.

In 1900 Mary H. Lawrence, with 2 of her previously found children and 2 new children, is living in Gallatin County, Illinois, and listed as a widow.
