John M McLeod dies at 68
John M. McLeod, respected local businessman and community leader, died Sunday at Arnot-Ogden Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. McLeod, of 952 Oak Hill Drive, was 68.
At the time of his death, Mr. McLeod was chief executive officer and chairman of the board of LeValley McLeod Inc. a local plumbing, heating, electrical and electronic wholesaling firm founded by his grandfather.
A native Elmiran, Mr. McLeod was president of his Elmira Free Academy class that gradted in 1929. After a year in Roxbury School, Cheshire, Conn., Mr. McLeod entered Yale Universiby, graduating with a B.A. degree in 1934.
He then joined Hardinge Bros. Inc., working out of Hartford, Conn., as that firm’s salesman in the northeast. Mr. McLeod permanently returned to Elmira to join LeValley McLeod in 1947.
A member of Grace Episcopal Church, Mr. McLeod served on the boards of directors for Hardinge Bros., Chemung Canal Trsut Co. and Mellor Advertising Agency.
He was past president and capaign chairman for the form Community Chest, now known as the United Way. A past vice president of Radio Elmira Inc. (WELM), Mr. McLeod also served on the advisory boards of the Salvation Army and Home for the Aged.
The former vice president and director of the Elmira Association of Commerce was also a past president of the Elmira ity Club and a member of the Yale Club and Elmira College Council.

Announcement has been made by Mr. and Mrs. James H. Sheldon of 277 Park Avenue of the engagement of their daughter, Miss Elizabeth Sheldon, to John M. McLeod, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur B. McLeod of Elmira.

Miss Sheldon is a graduate of Bennett School, Milbrook. Her fiancé prepared at Roxbury School and was graduated in 1934 from Yale, where he was a member of Chi Psi.
