H. B. Tormohlen of Holland, Found Dead
Special to The Independent
Holland, Ind., Jan 19 - When August Mauntel, a neighbor to Harry Tormohlen, near Holland went to the barn on the latter’s farm between 8:00 and 9:00 o’clock Monday morning, he found the body of H.B. Tormohlen, the father, hanging from the rafters of the barn. The body was still warm so every effort was made to revive Mr. Tormohlen, but life was already extinct. Coroner Bretz returned a verdict of suicide by hanging.
Henry B. Tormohlen, son of George Tormohlen and his wife Elizabeth nee Noelker, was born Feb. 15, 1861 on the old Tormohlen homestead two and one half miles south of Holland. In early infancy he was consecrated to his Savior in holy Baptism. In later years he was instructed in the truths of God’s Word as taught by the Evangelical Lutheran Church. As an adult he was received into church fellowship with St. James Lutheran Church, of which he was a member until his death.
On April 28, 1884 he was united in marriage to Louise M Bredford. To this union was born two sons, Ben and Harry, both surviving, Mrs. Elenora Siebe and Mrs. Clara Schmeltekop both of Huntingburg, Mrs. Emma Linhart of Dale, and daughter, Ester who passed from life June 30, 1896.
Winding his way down life’s trail, he ever sought to show kindness with who so ever he came in contact, to wife, to children, neighbors and friends. For the last 20 years he suffered greatly from nervous affliction and which at times became depressing, until he reached the breaking point. Especially was this the case after God called his devoted helpmate from him, May 10 of last year. He reached the age of 65 years, 11 months, 2 days, passing from life Monday Jan. 17, 1927. This departure is mourned by two sons, three daughters, ten grandchildren, four brothers, John, Dan, Sam and Fred Tormohlen, a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the home, Rev. J. L. Sealing, officiating this afternoon.
