Walter P. Shockley Sr. was born in Uniontown, Ky., on Jan. 26, 1927, and died peacefully on Aug. 2, 2008, at the age of 81.
Walter was a veteran of World War II and spent 40 years working in the oil and gas industry in the eastern United States.
He is survived by his daughters, Carolyn Kincaid (husband Jim) of Charleston, Vera Smith, also of Charleston and Kelly Freshour of Lincolnton, N.C.; his two sons, Walter Jr. (wife Sharon) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Gregory (wife Dee) of Clarksburg; daughter-in-law, Linda of Ripley; grandchildren, Bryan, Kenneth, Claude, Jeremiah, Devon, Casey and Kayla; and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Morgan, Braxton, Abbie, Allyson, Claude and Jena.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; sons, Parvin and Dwight; and son-in-law, Swanson Smith.
Spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and playing golf were his favorite pastimes.
The family would like to thank Mary McClain of Ripley and the staff of Ravenswood Rescare for their help in caring for our father during the latter months of his life.
Friends will be received Aug. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vail Funeral Home, 115 Church N., Ripley, WV 25271.
Funeral services will be held at Vail Funeral Home on Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. Interment with Military Rites by American Legion Post 107, Ripley, will follow at Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville.
