Youth Is Killed When Tractor’s Weight Breaks Bridge

Vernon Zurfluh, twenty-three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Zurfluh, prominent ranchers of Pleasant Valley in Washoe county, was killed yesterday afternoon when a power shovel which he was driving fell through a steel bridge over the East Walker river, nine miles from Yerington.
The forty-ton shovel, mounted on a caterpillar tractor, had reached the center of the bridge when the structure gave way and the machine toppled into the shallow water on its side. Zurfluh and a companion attempted to jump, but Zurfluh, according to witnesses, ran around the shovel and was caught beneath it when it landed in the water. His companion leaped to safety.
Though his head was held above water by members of the rescue crew they were unable to extricate him from the wreckage and he died within half and hour, presumably from internal injuries sustained when the tractor crushed his body into the sand of the river bottom.
Late last evening the body was taken from the wreckage after crews had worked for three hours digging the sand and rock away. The body was taken to Yerington and will be brought here tomorrow for funeral services, which are being arranged by the Ross-Burke Company.
The power shovel belonged to the Nevada Rock & Sand company, highway contractors. Zurfluh had been employed by the company for some time. According to friends he was to be married this month.
He was a native of Washoe county and had resided here all his life. A brother Forrest L. Zurfluh of Reno and his parents survive.
Soon after the body was taken from the water the gasoline tank of the tractor caught fire and exploded last night. The Yerington fire department was called and assisted in extinguishing the flames.
The heavy machine was still in the river this morning.
