Julia Cuneo, Hospital Auxiliary Chief
By Kenan Heise.
Julia Josephine Cuneo, 88, a member of an early Chicago family, co-founded and was the president of the Frank Cuneo Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Cuneo died Monday night at her Vernon Hills home after a lengthy illness.
“She was raised in the day of elegant ladies,” her son, John F. Jr., said. “She was a gracious person. For many years, she was very social, but 12 years ago she was confined to a wheelchair and it put a partial brake on her social activities.”
Mrs. Cuneo, born Julia Shepherd, was raised by her grandfather, J.M. Shepherd, who lived to be 106. She attended an Eastern boarding school and St. Mary`s College at Notre Dame, Ind.
Her husband, John F. Sr., who died in 1977, founded Cuneo Press, was chairman of the executive committee of National Tea Co. and founded Hawthorn-Mellody Farms Dairy.
The pink mansion, where the couple had lived since 1937, was on the Hawthorn-Mellody Farms estate and had been built by utility magnate Samuel Insull between 1914 and 1918. The surrounding area has recently been annexed by Vernon Hills and will be used for residential development. The Vernon Hills mansion will be preserved as a house museum with gardens.
Mrs. Cuneo used the auxiliary at Frank Cuneo Memorial Hospital, named for her husband`s father and closed in July 1988, and its volunteers not only to help the hospital grow but also to provide additional services for patients. Her annual parties for the members of the auxiliary were a prominent social event in Chicago.
Survivors, besides her son, include a daughter, Consuela McAllister; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Blake-Lamb Funeral home, 1035 N. Dearborn St.
Mass for Mrs. Cuneo will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Assumption Catholic Church, 323 W. Illinois St.
