John Cuneo, printing firm owner, dies at 92
Deceased Name: JOHN F. CUNEO
JOHN F. CUNEO, a self-made multimillionaire printing company owner and real estate developer, died Saturday morning in Northwestern Memorial Hospital at age 92.

Mr. Cuneo, a prominent Philanthropist, nationally known horse breeder, and collector or art and fine books, came from a wealthy family. But he spurned the chance to join his father's produce firm and struck out on his own to build a fortune. A family spokesman said he was active until his death, putting in a full business day until he was hospitalized recently and continued to conduct business by telephone from his hospital bed.

Mr. Cuneo began amassing his fortune in 1907, when he borrowed $10,000 to found Cuneo Press. He built it into one of the giants of commercial printing.

In 1965 his personal net worth was estimated at more than $120 million.

He was chairman of Cuneo Press at his death.

He also was owner of Milwaukee-Golf Development Corp., developers of the Golf Mill Shopping center in Niles.

In his last years, he devoted much of his time to development of CamelView Plaza, a shopping center and office building complex in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Until a few years ago, he owned Hawthorn-Mellody Farms Dairy, near Libertyville. He lived there on a 3,400-acre estate in a palatial Italian-style villa built by the late Samuel Insull.

BORN DEC. 24, 1884, in Chicago, Mr. Cuneo was the third generation in his family to become prominent in Chicago's business community. His grandfather, John B. Cuneo, came here in 1847 from Genoa, Italy, and prospered as a produce and wholesale grocery merchant.

His father, Frank Cuneo, president of the produce firm of Garibaldi and Cuneo, invested in real estate and was credited with starting the development of the Wilson Avenue business district in 1910.

Mr. Cuneo was a benefactor of such causes as the Frank Cuneo Memorial Hospital, the Catholic Church, and Loyola University and its Stritch School of Medicine.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Julia Shepherd Cuneo; a son, John F. Cuneo Jr. of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Consuela Roti of Paradise Valley, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
