Lloyd P. Smith ’25 died June 17, 1988 at Stanford, Calif. He was president of the Desert Research Institute from 1975-80. A Reno native, he went on to obtain his Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University in 1930. After working for General Electric Co. as a research engineer, he went into teaching at Cornell University and was associated with Cornell for 27 years. From 1946-56 he was chairman of Cornell’s physics department and director of its department of engineering physics. After retiring from Cornall in 1956 he became vice president and director of Avco Manufacturing Corp., and also served as president of the firm’s research and advanced development division. He then became research director for Aeronutronic, a division of Ford Motor Co., and subsequently moved to Philco Corporation as vice president for research in 1963. Next he served as vice president of the corporation and director of the Aeronutronic Division’s Applied Research Laboratories. During his career he was a scientific consultant to numerous governmental agencies and industrial firms. He managed Lloyd P. Smith and Associates, a consulting service engaged in making inventions and innovations aimed at producing new processes, products and services for companies interested in increasing their growth and profit. Among some of his honors and awards are the Navy Certificate of merit for wartime accomplishment and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Nevada; he also received the Ford Motor Company Award for Outstanding Community Service. He was the author of numerous publications in science and education as well as a book, “Mathematical Methods for Scientists and Engineers.” He also held a number of patents.
