Preston Smith Veteran Reno Bricklayer Dies
Prominently identified with the bricklaying and street contracting industries in Reno for nearly a half century, Preston Brooks Smith died at his home on West Fifth street at 10:30 a.m. today. He had been ill for some time.
Mr. Smith was the father of Francis R. Smith, mayor of Reno.
Born in Santa Rosa, Calif. Nov. 15, 1873, Mr. Smith attended school in Sonoma and San Luis Obispo counties and at the age of 14 years he had learned the trade of brick layer.
Coming to Nevada in the fall of 1899 he worked for several months at Wadsworth helping to build the high school there. He then moved to Reno where he has made his home ever since with the exception of about 18 months when he manufactured brick at Susanville and Alturas. He also had a plant at Reno but subsequently sold it to the late C.E. Clough who was president of the Press Brick company.
As a brick manufacturer Mr. Smith was many years ago a member of the form of Smith and Farion and while a manufacturer and brick contractor, he frequently did the actual work of laying brick himself, and did not retire from active work at his trade until 1931. He made the brick and laid them for his own home at 729 West Fifth st., and his contracting included many of the older brick buildings in Reno, the Golden and Overland hotels, Reno central fire station, the old post office building, Mackay school of mines, and the roundhouse at the Southern Pacific shops in Sparks. In 1917 with the late Marius Peterson he founded the firm of Smith Peterson and Company which operates large plants in the Reno area. The concern has supplied rock and sand and other material for nearly all the paving in Reno and vicinity for a good many years. He retired in 1944.
Active in Masonry, Mr. Smith was a member of Reno lodge No. 13, F. and A. M., was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Kerak temple of the Shrine and Adah chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He also held membership in Reno lodge of Elks and the Bricklayers union.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ida Sauer Smith, whom he married in Reno March 2, 1902; two sons, Lloyd P. Smith, professor of physics at Cornell univeristy, Ithaca, N.Y.; Francis R. Smith, mayor of Reno and president of Ready Mix Concrete co., a daughter, Mrs. Jack Heward of Winnemucca and the following grandchildren: Joan Frances Smith, Linda Sue Smith and Robert Gordon Smith of Reno and Barbara Heward and Harlan P. Heward of Winnemucca.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Ross-Burke company.
