In the presence of a large group of relatives and close friends who gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Preston B. Smith this afternoon Miss Helen Smith and Mr. John H. Heward, both prominent young residents of Washoe county, were married. The ceremony was performed at two o’clock by Rev. Brewster Adams in a beautiful floral setting with many colorful garden flowers, roses, snapdragons and delphinium being used. The bridal party took their places before the fireplace that was banked with ferns and potted plants and lighted with tall ivory candles in silver candelabra. Before the ceremony Miss Dorothea Shidler sang “At Dawning” and “Because” and to the strains of Lohengrin’s wedding march played by Mr. Lloyd Smith, the wedding party entered, the bride on the arm of her father. The bridal gown was of white satin made on princess lines with high lace collar and long sleeves puffed to the elbow and tight to the wrist. She wore a tight fitting lace cap from which flowed a tulle veil of knee length. The bride’s bouquet was of gardenias and lilies of the valley made in shower effect with streamers of tulle. Mrs. Norton Newell was matron of honor and wore a pink crepe jacket dress with matching accessories. She carried a bouquet of deep pink roses. Mr. Harlan Heward, brother of the groom, was best man. The flower girl was Freda Jean Kornmayer, who was daintily dressed in ruffled blue organdie. She carried a basket filled with pink sweet peas.

The bride’s mother, Mrs. Preston B. Smith, wore a blue flowered printed chiffon and the groom’s mother, Mrs. Ralph Nelson, wore a blue georgette gown. Both had cosages of gardenias.

Following the impressive wedding ceremony of the Baptist church, a reception was held in the garden at the Smith home. The refreshment table was covered with a lace cloth and decorated with white flowers and two wedding cakes. Mr. and Mrs. Heward left during the late afternoon for a honeymoon to San Francisco and Yosemite.

Mrs. Heward, popular daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Preston B. Smith, prominent Reno residents, was educated in Reno and is a graduate of the University of Nevada, and spent a year at Cornell University where received a master’s degree. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and two honor fraternities, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Ci. She taught at Gerlach and at the University of Nevada for a year.

Mr. Heward, son of Mrs. Ralph Nelson, formerly of Reno, attended the Reno schools and the University of Nevada and was prominent in athletics. He is now engaged in stock-raising at Gerlach and represented that district in the state legislature at the last session. He is a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Mr. and Mrs. Heward will reside near Gerlach following their returen from a wedding trip.
