Mrs. Ida Smith, Washoe Valley Native Passes

Mrs. Ida Smith, mother of former Reno Mayor Francis R. Smith, died in a Reno hospital this morning.

She was born in Washoe Valley, Sept 20, 1874, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Sauer, pioneer residents of this area. Her parents settled in Washoe Valley in 1859.

Mrs. Smith attended Bishop Whitaker’s Seminary here and graduated from the University of Nevada.

She was a member of Adah Chapter, No. 4, Order of the Eastern Star; past president of Mary S. Doten Mothers Club; a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Tri Delta Mothers Club and Trinity Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Her husband, the late Preston B. Smith, preceded her in death.

Mr. Smith was a member of the firm of Smith, Peterson & Co., rock, sand and brick contractors. He came to Nevada in 1899 from Santa Rosa, Calif. and was active in the brick contracting business until he retired in 1931. He and his associates supplied materials for much of the paving in the city of Reno and he supplied the brick for the old Southern Pacific roundhouse in Sparks. He and Mrs. Smith were married here March 2, 1902.

Francis Smith, her son, served as mayor of Reno from 1947 to 1955 and has been active in civic affairs. He is owner of the Ready-Mix Concrete Co. in Reno.

She is also survived by another son, Dr. Lloyd P. Smith, Corona Del Mar, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Jack Heward, Winnemucca; five grandchildren, Mrs. Joan Paschal, Fort Collins, Colo.; Mrs. Linda Crossett, Sparks; Robert Smith, Reno; Barbara Heward, Phoenix, Ariz., and Harlan Heward, Reno.
