Viola Sauer Dies in Reno
Member of a pioneer Nevada family, Mrs. Viola M. Sauer died early Saturday evening. She had been ill but a short time and was in the hospital but one day.

Her father was George S. Smith, who was born in England and came to Nevada in 1858. Mr. Smith’s father had been one of the early converts to Mormonism in England, and he brought his family to this region, which was then the western part of Utah Territory. George S. Smith settled on a ranch in Pleasant Valley, and later operated a general store in Washoe City.

Viola M. Smith was born May 2, 1880 at Washoe City and spent her entire life in Pleasant and Washoe Valleys. She was married on Jan. 14, 1901, to Frank J. Sauer, Washoe Valley rancher, whose parents had settled here in the early days. Their house in Washoe Valley was destroyed by fire in 1929 and they built a new and attractive brick home on the west side overlooking the valley. Mr. Sauer died a few years ago.

Mrs. Sauer for many years was an active member of the Washoe County Farm Bureau, the Homemakers Club and Nevada Star Grange.

Surviving are a son and two daughters, Leo F. Sauer, Miss Ruth Sauer and Mrs. Esther Ames, all of Reno; six grandchildren, Mrs. Laura May Lingenfelter, Wayne Sauer, Mrs. Donna Richardson, Mrs. Doris Joslyn, Evelyn and Frank Ames, all of Reno; two great grandchildren, Brad Lingenfelter and Karen Ann Richardson, both of Reno. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Ross-Burke home chapel with the Rev. John T. Ledger of Trinity Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic section of Mountain View cemetery.
